After sniffing the packets to see how this color kinetics LED tile works, I created a Processing library that reads the pixels of the display window, converts them to a 12×12 matrix, and writes them out as UDP packets to the data/power supply for the LEDs. My goal is to create some interesting real-time, interactive lighting applications. Just got this working today and did two quick experiments:

A big thank you to Shawn Van Every for solving my packet sniffing woes when I was stumped!

[00:00:18]What happens if I embed two videos using the plug-in in the same post?

    [00:00:14]That looks great!

I like when I see my name.. ;-)

[00:00:11]Wow, this is sweet. Now can you make the processing bit a web applet that allows me to control the led matrix?

Daniel, where did you get the LED array? Just curious.

  6. 6 Daniel

    It’s made by Color Kinetics.

    [00:00:35]Hi:
Did you bought that led array or its “made at home”?
I trying the same… actually just beginning to write some code.

Could you have it show John Conway’s Game of Life? (More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway%27s_Game_of_Life, Java simulation at http://www.bitstorm.org/gameoflife/).

    That would be cool.

Is this an icolor tile FX 2.2? Looks really cool. Can you tell us where you got yours? Did you buy it from ColorKinetics, or via another source? How much was it?

Cool stuff! The real world apps for this kind of thing I can imagine are … well … sexy. Need more details, the web-based christmas lighting ist about to hit the neighbourhood.

    Very cool.
They don’t seem to do direct sales of the panels, or I just had trouble finding a price. How much did that guy cost you?

Unless your a distributor and looking at buying in bulk – they won’t deal with single purchases. Find a distributor in your country.

Colour Kinetics icolour range is all designed for deployment in architectural/set based instals/prodcutions. If you think one looks cool, wait till you can design a righ with +100. Colour Kinetics also developed the software to run Mainlight’s SoftLED, basically, a led panels sown into drape.

Please tell me you plan to share this library!

  14. 14 Daniel

Sure, I just need to find some time to clean it up and make it available. I will probably release it as a generic UDP library, which could be used with anything, not just Color Kinetics products. . .
